Dubrovnik: The Pearl of the Adriatic on a Budget

January 2, 2026

Dubrovnik, often called the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is one of Europe's most visually stunning cities. Its perfectly preserved medieval walls encircle a UNESCO-listed old town of marble streets, baroque churches, and terracotta rooftops cascading down to the turquoise sea. Game of Thrones fans will recognize it as King's Landing.

Getting There

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is served by numerous European budget airlines during the season (April-October). Ryanair, easyJet, and Vueling offer fares from €25-50. Off-season flights are even cheaper. Use Flajt.com to compare — Split Airport (SPU), 3 hours away by bus, sometimes has significantly cheaper flights.

Old Town Highlights

Walking the city walls (€35 but absolutely worth it) offers the most spectacular views. The Stradun, Dubrovnik's main limestone-paved street, is free to stroll. Visit the Rector's Palace, Sponza Palace, and the beautiful Franciscan Monastery. For Game of Thrones fans, self-guided walking tours using free online maps cover all major filming locations.

Beaches

Banje Beach is the most famous, right outside the old town walls. For a quieter experience, take the local bus to Lapad or Copacabana Beach (€2). The hidden gem? Betina Cave Beach, a rocky cove accessible by hiking from the Bellevue Hotel area, completely free and rarely crowded.

Food and Drink

Dubrovnik has a reputation for being expensive, but locals know the tricks. Skip restaurants on the Stradun and head to Gruž or Lapad for seafood at half the price. A "buzara" (shellfish stew, €10-14) or fresh grilled fish (€8-12) with local wine is an unforgettable meal. Street food: burek (stuffed pastry, €2-3) and ćevapi (grilled meat, €5-7).

Day Trips

Take a ferry to Lokrum Island (€15 round trip) for a car-free paradise with peacocks, a botanical garden, and a nude beach. Cavtat, a charming coastal town 20 minutes by bus (€3), offers relaxed beaches and excellent restaurants at lower prices.

Best Time to Visit

May-June and September-October avoid the cruise ship crowds of July-August. A weekend costs €300-400 per person. Find cheap flights on Flajt.com!
